This is an appealing antique oil portrait of a young, fair-haired child with expressive blue eyes and rosy cheeks, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
The child is depicted in a red dress or cloak tied with a bow, which contrasts beautifully with their blonde, curly hair. The painting technique is characteristic of the period, with a rich, dark background that draws focus to the subject's face.
Details and Provenance
Medium: Oil on canvas or board.
Frame: Housed in a lovely, ornate giltwood frame with decorative relief work, showing signs of age and wear which add to its vintage character.
Size: The painting measures approximately 30.5 x 23cm, not including the frame.
Artist: The artist is currently unknown, although there appears to be a faint signature or initial "E.S." (or similar) in the lower right corner (see close-up image).
Reverse Side Notes: The back of the stretcher contains several interesting historical notes:
A sticker for E. Parker, Artist Repository, Montpellier, Cheltenham (UK), indicating an early supply or framing source.
Handwritten notes on the backboard include what appears to be a name and address: "Miss Hayward, 3B Imperial Sq". This may indicate an early owner or the subject.
The back also features a label for Gallery de Boer (Owen Sound, Ontario) for conservation, framing & restoration.
This piece is a charming example of sentimental Victorian or Edwardian portraiture and makes a wonderful decorative accent. The notations on the back offer an intriguing glimpse into its history.
